U2 se formó en 1978 después de Larry Mullen colocó un anuncio en su escuela solicitando músicos para formar una banda en Dublín. De entre muchos jovencitos Larry selecciono a David Evans, Paul Hewson y Adam Clayton. Ninguno de los 4 tenía mucha preparación musical, pero fueron apoyados por sus maestros de preparatoria para que siguieran con su vocación y aprendieron rápidamente. En un principio la agrupación se llamo Feedback, para después cambiar al nombre de The Hype, para después terminar con el nombre de U2 (este nombres de un avión espía norteamericano que en los años 60 se hizo famoso por haber caído en Rusia). Los jóvenes de U2 decidieron cambiarse el nombre. Paul Hewson se autonombró Bono Vox, su apodo lo saco de un anuncio. David Evans se quedo con el apodo de The Edge, Adam se quedo como Adam y Larry se agrego el Jr al final por que su padre tenia el mismo nombre. Tuvieron que esperar tres años para sacar su primer álbum. En 1980 sacan su primer disco “boy” que tuvo mucho éxito nacionalmente. El segundo disco se grabo en el verano de 1981 “October” que aunque en un principio tuvo ventas altas después se estanco. El disco no logro superar las 250 mil copias. En 1982 sale a la venta “War” probando que la agrupación estaba sólida en el gusto popular y con este material discográfico el éxito internacional llego. A estos le siguieron: Under Bloody Red Sky, The Unforgettable Fire, The Joshua Tree (con los sencillos “With Or Without You” y “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” los coloco en la cima de la popularidad), Rattle and Hum, Achtung Baby, Zooropa, Pop, All That You Can Leave Behind, How to Dismantle An Atomic Bomb, y su ultimo material No Line On The Horizon en marzo del 2009.
